What Is The ADA Seal of Acceptance?

Many patients ask which home care products they should use. We always try to make recommendations based on individual needs, but a good place to start is to look for the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. The American Dental Association (ADA) created the seal to assure consumers that the claims on seal-awarded products had been validated by research and testing. Over 300 products currently carry the Seal ranging from denture adhesives to toothpaste.

The ADA Seal of Acceptance

Obtaining a Seal of Acceptance is voluntary. To qualify, manufacturers contact the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs and submit information about their products showing they are safe and effective. This includes ingredient lists, results of research, evidence of good manufacturing processes, packaging, and advertising information. The products then undergo extensive testing to make sure they do what they say they will do.

The ADA Seal is different from FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approval. The ADA Seal means the product is effective for the use for which it is being sold whereas the FDA insures that the product is safe for human use. The FDA, in other words, does not test for efficacy.

If a product does not have the ADA Seal of Acceptance, that does not necessarily mean it is bad or ineffective. The products could be very effective but perhaps the manufacturer did not have the time or money to undergo the rigorous process of obtaining the seal, or didn't feel they needed the ADA seal to sell the product. Many homeopathic products make claims that cannot be scientifically proven and thus are ineligible to receive the seal, but yet, they still work very well for people.
